Meskel

MeskelOne of the fascinating aspects of living on site is the variety of church life experienced on the compound and quite often we are awoken at 6am by the singing of the Ethiopian Orthodox community regularly on Sunday mornings but also when they are celebrating a special festival. On Thursday 27th September it was Meskel, an annual holiday in Ethiopia marking the occasion when Queen Eleni had a revelation in a dream and found the place where the true cross was buried in Jerusalem and part of it was taken to Ethiopia. Whatever the historicity of the events, there is an impressive devotion expressed by the Ethiopian community, a wonderful spirit of community and generosity of spirit to those who are in need.
