Diocesan Synod

Diocesan SynodWe returned to Cyprus on Sunday for a Bishop’s Council/Standing Committee meeting first thing on Monday 4th with the Synod starting on the Monday afternoon. I chaired the first session of Synod (not the most challenging of sessions, but hopefully setting the scene for the sessions following) and presided at Communion on the Tuesday morning so after that I was able to relax from formal duties. Synod is a remarkable time, a mix of worship, teaching, retreat, business and eating and meeting. Bishop Peter Selby was the main speaker and he led four sessions based on the themes – Power, Money, Sex and Time- from the Church of England Doctrine Commission Report Being Human published ten years ago.

Gideon GithigaFor me one of the special joys of Synod this year was meeting up with an old friend from when I taught in Kenya 39 years ago, who is now the Bishop of our partner Diocese of Thika, Gideon Githiga. He taught in a school a few miles down the road and we were both involved in the Murang’a Associates Team, a group of Christian teachers who visited schools in the area to lead worship and teach. We also both attended a Christian convention at Thika High School. We had much to catch up on
