On Tuesday we went to see 12 years a Slave, which despite its Oscar nominations, is only showing in Dana Mall. It’s a powerful film, almost unbearable to watch sometimes because of the violence. Samuel Northup, born a freeman in the North was kidnapped and taken south. Perhaps the most shocking part was that many who committed such violence against those taken as slaves were God-fearing people who would gather their households together to read the Bible. Those who longed for liberation were also shaped by the scriptures and interpreted them in a very different way. It calls us to be wary of those who believe that their way of reading scripture is the only possible interpretation. |
