As well as the birthday bash on Saturday, I had the privilege of taking the marriage of Michael Lightfoot to Clare Hatfield in the morning. It has been a joy to get to know them as they have become regular members of our Friday morning service. They had chosen their readings and hymns with great care and had responded to the challenge of writing a wedding verse for This is the Day, so the second verse was This is the day when God seals our love. I picked up two themes in my address: the first being that of putting on special clothes something that we’re all familiar with for a wedding. Paul in Colossians writes: clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness humility, gentleness and patience (and here the wedding image breaks down) put on the overalls of love. The second theme was one of hope both from the first reading from Song of Solomon: winter is over, the rain is over and gone, the flowers appear on earth; and from the second hymn, it’s from the old I travel to the new, keep me travelling along with you. |
