US CemeteryJewish War GraveFollowing Philippa’s graduation we went to very simple cottage in Normandy for ten days and the rain followed us. One moving experience of that time was going to one of the large American cemeteries on Independence Day, when each of us was given a rose to place on an individual grave. In a cemetery that had so many graves it was moving to remember the sacrifice of one young man Gilbert Green from Florida, who died on September 3rd 1944. Tricia was given a rose to place on the grave of Hyman Esses from New York who died on July 29th 1944.The Battle for NormandyAlthough we were some distance from the D-Day Normandy beaches, it has encouraged me to read Antony Beevor’s book D-Day The Battle for Normandy.
