Reaching the Sea: Tuesday 30thDecember 2015
Sometimes living in Bahrain and living in the center of Manama, it doesn’t seem as though we are living on an island as so much of the land on the island’s edges have been reclaimed and it is a challenge to get to the water’s edge or it is impossible to get to a beach except to rather artificial hotel private beaches which we tend to avoid. So it was a wholly new experience to go kayaking in the lagoon of Amwaj Island on the final day of our daughter Philippa’s time in Bahrain before she flew back to London. The next day I was aware of muscles that I hadn’t used in a while but it was such a pleasant afternoon and all the more so being a spontaneous invitation from Anne and Kevin Stephens.
Another experience of the sea was a walk around Nabih Island off the Sitra Causeway in Tubli Bay, something that we hadn’t done before. There were flamingoes on the coast and fishing boats in another area of the island and it had a very authentic local feel to it and people were very friendly in their welcome and greetings.
