Great British Week Dinner

British WeekIn recognition of the Cathedral’s involvement in the Great British Week, Tricia and I were invited to the celebration dinner at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel and it was clear that the week had been a great success. The iconic minis and Routemaster doubledecker bus were parked outside the hotel. Shaikh Nasser attended the pre-dinner drinks. Speeches were made before the dinner began, the Ambassador proudly highlighting that this had been the largest event put on by the smallest embassy in the region.  There was a fashion show of British clothes between the starter and the main course. The comedian who was the MC did a good job in that role, but when he came to the comedy slot rather spoilt the evening by being unnecessarily rude, crude and vulgar and I felt embarassed on behalf of our Bahraini guests. Give me Andrew Petty as MC and Milton Jones as comedian any day. I invited Milton Jones, who has had several shows on BBC Radio 4, to do an evening of comedy for a parish event in my previous parish – bringing together 4 churches and the wider community for a brilliant evening. But nothing could take away from the sense of joy and achievement at the end of a very demanding week.
